The Common Types of Lymphoma

The Common Types of Lymphoma

Cancer that affects the lymph system of the body is called lymphoma. The lymph system comprises of lymph vessels and nodes that help carry white blood cells through the body, so the lymph system protects the body from infection.

Listed here are the most common types of lymphoma that can impact the lymph cells, which are also called as lymphocytes:

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
N on-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is among the most common types of lymphoma. There are many sub-types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, with a total of 61 subtypes. As there are so many subtypes of this condition, categorizing them has been difficult, so the World Health Organization has come out with certain ways to categorize non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. This categorization is based on how the lymphoma appears in a microscope. The chromosome characteristics of lymphoma cells and whether the lymphoma originated in B-cells or T-cells helps make the categorization. Let’s look at the common types of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma:

  • B-cell lymphoma:  B-cell lymphomas originate in certain cells of the body called B-cells. There are several forms of B-cell lymphomas, including nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, marginal zone B-cell lymphomas, splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma, Burkitt lymphoma, primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma. Out of all these, diffused large B-cell lymphoma is the most commonly diagnosed type.
  • T-cell lymphoma:  A very small percentage of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas are T-cell lymphomas. There are two main divisions of T-cell lymphomas: precursor T-lymphoblastic lymphoma and peripheral T-cell lymphoma. Out of these, peripheral T-cell lymphoma is further divided into subtypes of extranodal T-cell lymphoma, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, and enteropathy-associated intestinal T-cell lymphoma.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a rare form of the disease and is categorized into two subtypes: classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma. Classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma is marked by the presence of the Reed-Sternberg cells. There are many subtypes of classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and the main subtypes are lymphocyte-depleted, lymphocyte-rich mixed cellularity, and nodular sclerosis. Out of all of these subtypes, Nodular sclerosis is the most common and Lymphocyte-depleted is one of the rarest forms that develops in patients affected by HIV. Mixed cellularity Hodgkin’s lymphoma is generally diagnosed in children and very elderly patients.

The Nodular Lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma is also marked by the Reed-Sternberg cells. The condition generally affects the lymphocytes in the neck and the underarm region. This form also develops more slowly than the classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The treatments for the classic Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin’s lymphoma are different from each other.
